Last night I went to see Hot Club Sandwich at the Bitter End pub in downtown Portland. As always, Greg Ruby was dressed to impress and playing fantastic. One thing that that band has, is nice energy, and smiles, which is a very important thing.
I looked around during the show, and other than Jason Okamoto, who played as a guest for a few songs, there were the the 4 members of Gadjo Djazz, myself, and one or two other guitar players that I recognized from Portland. As usual, the show was packed, and they rearranged the tables this time to accomodate more people, which helped a lot because this time my girlfriend and I both got front row seats.

The meaning of "manouche"

I found this definition on the HotClub forums list, posted by ‘Captain Swing’.
” I’m no expert, but as I understand it, the ‘manouche’ gypsies are from Alsace (the area around Strasbourg, near the German border) whereas Gypsies from the south (Camargue) are often linked with Spanish gypsies and are called ‘Gitans’. The ‘Tzigane’ are Hungarian/Romanian gypsies. Most French people don’t even make a difference.
Perhaps because Django was a Manouche, and ‘gypsy-jazz’ music is so accociated with Paris & France, the word has become synonymous with gypsy-jazz guitar.”
As for examples, Django was a Manouche, Matelo is a Gitane, and Jimmy Rosenberg is a Sinti.
