I have tried to figure out which major scale related arpeggios are best when playing leads like how Django himself did, with two fingers. I have come up with two basic arpeggios that you need to know to develop this technique. The first one is a Cmaj7 arpeggio that is very two finger friendly when played in the two finger decending pattern that I show. The second is a C6 pattern that is also perfect when played with just the first two fingers on the left hand.

Even though these are both major patterns, they should not necessarily be used over the same major chords. Make sure that you are aware of using the 6th and the 7th and its effect over the top of the chords that the rhythm player is using, which are quite often EITHER maj7 chords or maj6/9 chords.
Two fingered maj7 and maj6 arpeggios
The infamous minor 7b5 pattern
This particular run is the ever important E minor seventh flat 5. Note that this run has 2 separate arpeggio patterns that I have outlined here in the key of F major. This run will probably also play over the keys of Bb major, which is the fourth of F, or G minor, which is the 2nd chord in F major. Try playing it, at slow speed, over Minor Blues, Ill See You In My Dreams, Night And Day, or Douce Ambiance, which all might match the key of G minor.

The trick to this is the start the minor 7 flat 5 scale on the note just beneath the key your in on the 5th string. So, in the key of F, start on the E, which you see, is the first note in the pattern above.
Djangofest set lists
This year I wasn’t able to get complete set lists because I was paying more attention to the performer and less attention to keeping my list, but I managed to get some things and here they are. I have probably made many mistakes here, but I think it is better than nothing. If you see anything let me know and I will fix it.

I bought my first Favino
It turns out that I just bought my first Favino guitar. I found it at Lark Street Music in New Jersey. He had petite bouche Favino #448 in stock and someone came in and traded it for grande bouche Favino #902. Originally I was thinking about buying the oval hole but it sold before I could decide and when the d-hole showed up, the decision was a bit easier. The guitar was bought around the year 2001 from Patrick Bitane in Amsterdam, and thats almost all that I know about it. It also has a name written inside but I cannot decipher it although it looks like a Roma name.
So now I have this guitar which is a totally different thing when you compare it to my Shelley Park guitar. This favino takes more muscle to play than my Park guitar. I takes a little bit more control to handle it but each day it gets a bit easier and its starting to sound fantastic. It was unstrung during shipment and so I think it took a few days for it to settle back into how it is supposed to feel.
If anyone else has a Favino d-hole, I would love to know who you are and keep in touch. The only people I know at this point are Ted G. and Scot Wise and it would be nice to know more.
Drifting tempos
I am not at all suggesting that the rhythmic elements of my own playing are nearly as solid as they should be but the biggest thing that i notice in jam sessions everywhere is that people tend to sink or swim to the one tempo that they are comfortable with (especially when establishing a tempo at the beginning of a song). Since this music should be dynamic from one song to another, everyone should keep in mind a minimum of a few different “distinct” tempos that they can “maintain” habitually. I think that a lot of “tempo drift” is because some players do not practice distinguishing different tempos in their practice routine, which should include a metronome.
Weekly jam session in Portland
Pete Krebs has arranged a once a week gypsy jazz jam session for Portland, Oregon. Now, once per week, on Saturday afternoons at The Moon and Sixpence British Pub there will be a gypsy jazz jam. The pub is located at 2014 NE 42nd Ave. and the jam goes from 4pm to 6pm. I am going to be at the first one this weekend and hopefully over the next few months it develops into something extremely fun for all of us.
If anyone out there is in Portland on a Saturday, look up the pub, call and see if were having a jam, and show up. I know that Michael Horowitz and Ted Gottsegen have a weekly jam up in Seattle and I think all of us down here in Portland are probably inspired by that. Im looking forward to seeing the talent in Portland go to a new level.
